The Little Princess
The Little Princess is a 1939 drama film starring Shirley Temple, based on the classic children’s novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story is set in Victorian-era London and follows the adventures of Sara Crewe, a young girl from a wealthy family who is sent to a prestigious boarding school while her father, Captain Crewe, goes off to fight in the Second Boer War.
Sara is treated like royalty at the school due to her father’s wealth and her kind, imaginative nature. She wins the hearts of her classmates and teachers with her storytelling and generosity. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she learns that her father is missing in action and presumed dead, leaving her penniless.
With her fortunes reversed, Sara is forced to work as a servant at the school under the harsh supervision of the cruel headmistress, Miss Minchin. Despite her hardships, Sara remains hopeful and continues to act with kindness and bravery, befriending the other servants and sharing her vivid imagination to uplift those around her.
As Sara endures her new life of poverty and mistreatment, she clings to the hope that her father is still alive. Eventually, through a series of miraculous events and her unyielding optimism, Sara’s fortunes change once more.
“The Little Princess” is a heartwarming tale of resilience, kindness, and the power of hope. The film combines Shirley Temple’s charm and talent with the timeless story of a girl who, despite losing everything, never loses her spirit or belief in the goodness of people.
