Triple Trouble (1918) silent
Triple Trouble (1918) is a silent comedy film starring Charlie Chaplin, though it was pieced together from unused footage and outtakes from earlier Chaplin films. The plot is somewhat disjointed due to its patchwork nature, but it centers around Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character, who finds himself caught in a series of comedic misadventures.
The story begins with the Tramp working as a janitor at a scientist’s laboratory, where an inventor is developing a new explosive device for the government. Chaos ensues when the Tramp inadvertently gets involved in a robbery plot to steal the invention. Along the way, he stumbles through slapstick encounters with crooks, a police officer, and other characters, creating humorous situations filled with classic Chaplin physical comedy. The film includes scenes of mistaken identity, chases, and hilarious misunderstandings, all driven by Chaplin’s signature brand of comedy.
Despite being an unofficial release, Triple Trouble retains many of the visual gags and comedic elements that made Chaplin’s early work so beloved, although it lacks the cohesion and polish of his more carefully crafted films.
